Over the past few years, more and more people are getting a pet stroller for their beloved pets. As strange as it may look, these strollers can be quite beneficial for pet owners. Here are some pet stroller training tips that will help you get Fido into that stroller and like it!
Teaching your cute little pup how to ride in a pet stroller isn’t going to happen overnight. Depending on your dog’s temperament and their personality, it could take more time than you may be anticipating.
If this is your dog’s first time in a pet stroller, try these steps to train your dog for riding in a pet stroller:
You should first introduce your pet to the stroller inside your home.
Make sure that the wheels are locked so the stroller cannot move. Then, you will want to encourage them to smell around the stroller and even inside. This will allow your dog to get more familiar with the stroller.
You could put their favorite pet blanket, bed, toy, or even a few treats inside the stroller. These things will reassure your dog that this is a good thing and it is for them.
Put your dog inside the stroller. You can then use a command like “up” or “in” and show them that they are to get inside the stroller. You may have to do this several times for it to catch on.
Once they get into the stroller on your command, you will want to make sure that they are secure and clip their leash to the stroller.
Start moving the stroller with your dog in it. You’ll want to move slowly, especially if your dog is easily spooked. It’s a good idea to do this at home and do it for a few minutes per day until your dog is relaxed while in the stroller. You can give him a treat or keep his toy or blanket in there with him for comfort.
We want to point out that it’s a good idea to pay attention to how your dog reacts while in the stroller. Some dogs simply aren’t cut out for the stroller life, no matter how many pet stroller training tips you use.
If you’ve tried everything you can to get your dog to relax and stay calm in the stroller, but they don’t respond well, then your dog is never going to adapt to the stroller.
However, if your dog takes to the pet stroller training without incident, then why not? There’s no harm in training your pup to ride in your pet stroller, even if some people may give you a second glance while you stroll right on by.
